The house is quiet,
save for my iPod playing softly in the background. Right now, it's Fever
Ray, "If I Had a Heart." I'm crazy in love with that song when
I'm writing; I literally had it on repeat when I was trying to power through
the last two chapters of The Last of the Delacroixs. But I'm particular
about the type of music I listen to while I write. It can't just be
anything; it's got to be the type of music that you can just close your eyes
and literally escape into another world.
I was madly in love
with Adiemus, a New Age group that emerged in the 90s, when I was
younger. As I've gotten older my tastes have changed. Now it's
Florence + The Machine, Sarah Brightman, Loreena McKennitt, Imogen Heap,
Phaeleh...
Everyone's writing
process is a bit different, and mine happens to include music. I met with
a wonderful aspiring writer today and many of her questions revolved around my
process. Then I had a mini-epiphany (trust me; these happen only once in
a blue moon) and I realized that people who are often intrigued to discover I'm
a writer aren't quite as fascinated with the content of my books but by how
exactly I do it.
So I figured that I
would blog about my daily writing travails in order to help any fledgling
writers along their path. If you pick up any tips that might help you,
all the better. If this is completely useless to you, I appreciate your reading
thus far. ;)
Setting the right kind
of mood for your writing is essential. Music is just the tip of the
iceberg. There is a lot of ground to cover in terms of my process so
we'll do it piece by piece. Some areas we're going to cover are:
Waiting for
inspiration
What I truly think of
outlines
How/Where do I get my
ideas for books
Traditional v. Indie
Publishing
Brewing your Formula
The Sweet Spot (My
favorite part! Tingles!)
Finding the
Time/Deadlines
Marketing &
Building an Online Presence
If you can think of
any other areas that you'd like to see covered or have any general questions,
please feel free to email me at info@angela-darling.com and I'll be sure to
include it in the blog.
I'll preface this by
saying that all of these things are of my opinion from someone that has been
writing for well over 20 years and what has deemed to work best for me.
Some things might not work best for you, and that's okay. Drop the stuff
that doesn't work and pick up whatever does. I'm also stoked to share any
tidbits about the projects that I have coming up and what I'm currently working
on...
For now... I'm
turning off the music and hitting the sack. Until tomorrow, friends...
